The PR Hamster Wheel. Why Do We Do it?
I am certain you have all asked yourself once in your PR profession . . . “Why can’t I get a break?”
Though demanding and often times overwhelming, I haven’t met ONE PR professional who would give it up for the world. This hamster wheel we run on everyday proves to be a rush and by all means gratifying. There are not many professions where you can start something and get immediate gratification. One pitch, one placement and you are on a high all day. Nothing can stop you and you can’t wait to move onto the next project.
This industry allows us to have creative freedom and think outside the box. At times we even throw that box away! We help shine lights on causes that are important. Personally, one of my favorite aspects of being a publicist is feeling good about what I do at the end of the day. And, that happens frequently in this profession.
Maybe its the fabulosity that comes with being a publicist – all the great events and people we get to meet. We get to wear fun clothes and channel Sex and the City’sSamantha Jones, an aggressive publicist with a style that will knock people off their feet (and a trucker’s mouth to go with it!). Regardless of why we all chose this profession, its fun and keeps us on our feet.
In fact, it was this week after three 16 to 18 hour days, I first began to question my sanity, then my social life (why don’t I get to see my husband and how am I going to fit a child in this schedule?) and finally why do I put myself through these long hours. Simply put I love it. And really, I am thankful everyday that I didn’t take the government route my father pushed on me for so many years. Think suit and cubicle – No thanks!
What is that you love about being a publicist?
