More Changes in San Diego Radio Landscape

denise_scatena_lgChris Carmichael from sdradio.net reports that Finest City Broadcasting (FCB), operators of San Diego radio stations Z90.3, 91X and Magic 92.5 will be acquired by Broadcast Company of the Americas (BCA). BCA currently operates XX1090, Walrus FM and AM 1700. Carmichael reports that the FCB’s sales staff is moving to their headquarters in Sorrento Mesa, but it’s not known what will happen to the station’s talent. Air staff includes popular morning radio hosts Jagger & Kristi on Magic 92.5, Mat Diablo on 91X and Tati on Z90.3.

This comes on the heels of three extremely popular radio morning show teams who have found themselves without a terrestrial radio home. Star 94.1’s Jeff & Jer , Rock 105.3’s Mikey Esparza and now 101 KGB’s Dave, Shelly and Chainsaw are no longer greeting their loyal morning listeners. The DSC was just shy of their 20th anniversary at San Diego’s Classic Rock station. These three were each once a ClearChannel San Diego staple, and each found themselves in contracts that could not be negotiated to their satisfaction. Another San Diego radio icon, Mike Halloran from FM 949 radio, did not have his contract renewed by Lincoln Financial Media Company of California.

A recent NBC San Diego interview with Chris Cantore of Legit Radio and former 91X radio personality who was one of the first casualties of the recession nearly two years ago, summarizes the state of radio not only in San Diego but across the United States, and offers his take on what’s needed to adapt and survive.
